A place where you can grab any kind of alcohol while you are there.

Women’s March

“Maybe we should take a break after this,” he sighs on the third ball of Medieval Madness. It’s about eleven on Friday night. The crowd has thinned slightly and this first date is bordering on bad. Thanks to an excess of 1st dates, I’ve developed intuition for match potential that outclasses any existing algorithm. Especially when it comes to the internet. Communication is difficult even under ideal circumstances and my superpower is filtering bullshit. Meeting amidst the romantic morass of OK Cupid, Allen began with a brick-through-the-window statement, “I want to meet you.” Continue reading Women’s March

The Secret Cultural Disparity in America

I’m less of an asshole when I’m stoned. If we are going to start segregating society into different slashtroverts with various social impairments can we at least agree not all the substances out there have consistent effects? I know when you get stoned it means you are stupid and silly. Being “stoned” has classic connotations that vary depending on your generation and cultural identity. I personally feel way more stoned on an opiate than cannabis. Some people take adderall to feel normal. Others take it because it’s an amphetamine. Vices exist in every corner of our psyche but are differently governed depending on your flavor of upbringing. Continue reading The Secret Cultural Disparity in America

Tourism

I miss my dog. I miss thunderstorms. I miss the P&H. Today, I filled out the Memphis Flyer annual popularity contest. Wrote in some of my personal favorites for a few categories and caught a bit of homesickness.  Continue reading Tourism

So cool

I look at the sunset
And say – that’s cool.
Do you hear passion
In the understatement?
My aching heart wincing
Pain from nature’s beauty.
Consistently unique colors
Smeared on temporal entropy
Like butter on dry toast.
I’m humming a melody
only I can hear. Monotone.
The chords are too weak
To support the structure.
Fortified harmonic lining
For her pleasure, at least.
Unintentional attention
Drawn to the sound itself.

Barefoot

I’ve been stuck on this moment from last week. Dave Cousar jammin’ with John Paul Keith at the Buccaneer.  I think I heard JPK at DKDC last season.  I really heard him last week.  The vibe there was palpable.  A room of talent pulsating with the passion of creation and all you have is my word for it.  WIN_20150715_003357 (3)

Dead Inside

These squinty eyes of mine. They may look glassy.  My expression one of cow-brained ignorance.

That’s just what I look like when I can’t hear.

Sometimes the chaos around me is so loud I can’t take it anymore. I just let all noise wash over me and fight my urge to fly.
I want to be there. I want to engage. At some point
the centre cannot hold.

Read the book An Unquiet Mind. There are revelations there.

I’m going back in.  See ya on the flip side.

An Unspecified Number of Things To Do In March

Hail to all the ice storm survivors.  As a city, we get the Oscar for most-improved performance in the event of frozen water.  Compared to ’94, I’m proud of Memphis and our little-salt-truck-that-could.   And after that freeze, everything from here on out is practically spring.  In that spirit, it’s time to knock the dust off and get out into the brisk air.  A good time to scout for new hangouts, there’s no reason to break the budget before spring official kicks off. Here are my favorite places to find free-ish things happening in Memphis.  Continue reading An Unspecified Number of Things To Do In March

DGIS! (Dear God, It’s Saturday)

I went out last night because it was Saturday night.

That…  is a terrible reason to go out.

Oh Christ.

I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful Christmas day.  Mother Earth did her part so feel free to relax and enjoy the splendor.  When the day turns to night and you wake up from that day-drinking nap, there are a few options for things to do.  Here’s my list of fun, friendly places to grab a seat and let go of another season’s worth of guilt and familial obligations.  Continue reading Oh Christ.
