Barefoot

I’ve been stuck on this moment from last week. Dave Cousar jammin’ with John Paul Keith at the Buccaneer.  I think I heard JPK at DKDC last season.  I really heard him last week.  The vibe there was palpable.  A room of talent pulsating with the passion of creation and all you have is my word for it.  WIN_20150715_003357 (3)

Sharing Loneliness (a sonnet)

Seeking comfort in solitude is like
Relaxing in a swamp.  Sinking into
The universal spirit only few
Share openly. Mind an unwinding spike
Enjoying oneness amid Nature’s Reich
Beautiful insignificant breakthrough.
Super and the ego open anew
The id savoring a odd hunger strike.
Eyes open, lying awake, still in bed
Hand inattentively petting the cat.
Letting thoughts pool at the back of my head.
Less often contemplated on my back
Loneliness is shared by a common thread
Commonly woven through a welcome mat.

Boxes

Compartments
with thin walls
Flowing together
into Mountains.
Safety in the hills.

Cells
of cardboard.
Keeping together
a body of work
Resting fetus-like
Waiting for enough
Gestation.

Rooms
in a row of homes.
More used the better
because I can’t
have nice things.
Durability makes
Antiques.

Cubicles
in a maze
with no cheese.
Footsore and weary
Limbs aching
Strained. FullRelaxation
Rare.

I Just Work Here

Living in the present is contradicted when working a day job. Some of us are lucky to find moderately fulfilling employment early on.  Alas, no matter how great the situation, it’s still work. I’m sure there are days when even the Crocodile Hunter wanted to just sleep in. The goal isn’t a job to love. It’s finding a purpose that isn’t simultaneously soul-crushing.  Continue reading I Just Work Here

Dead Inside

These squinty eyes of mine. They may look glassy.  My expression one of cow-brained ignorance.

That’s just what I look like when I can’t hear.

Sometimes the chaos around me is so loud I can’t take it anymore. I just let all noise wash over me and fight my urge to fly.
I want to be there. I want to engage. At some point
the centre cannot hold.

Read the book An Unquiet Mind. There are revelations there.

I’m going back in.  See ya on the flip side.

June 18

I’m considering open mic tonight.  The poetry kind.  I scribble notes that look like poems but they don’t have life until spoken.  Words on the page are limp and cold.  Coming from my mouth they take form, develop spirit, breathe with life.  No performance is the same as my mood tints the tone and time captures the meaning in that single moment.  Other words are carved in stone and can only be repeated.

June 1st

I am the sun and the moon

I have not begun to shine
because the world is not ready for me

The pretention
The pride
MY TIMING IS GREAT.

I am trained to do the things you taught me
and I am BORED.

My anger swells and I need a place for therapy.
Look at me. I’m art. I’m pretty. I’m the thing you want. Media loves me. I’m great with the tweens.

I know what I am.
So why am I still sad?

Why am I alone and afraid and looking for a reason to keep going?

I am the abyss. Look into me.

On second thought, Take a picture, it’ll last longer.

I’m tired of apologizing. I’m tired of being afraid.
I work hard and I’m ready to be here.

Do your worst. I’m not backing down.

An Unspecified Number of Things To Do In March

Hail to all the ice storm survivors.  As a city, we get the Oscar for most-improved performance in the event of frozen water.  Compared to ’94, I’m proud of Memphis and our little-salt-truck-that-could.   And after that freeze, everything from here on out is practically spring.  In that spirit, it’s time to knock the dust off and get out into the brisk air.  A good time to scout for new hangouts, there’s no reason to break the budget before spring official kicks off. Here are my favorite places to find free-ish things happening in Memphis.  Continue reading An Unspecified Number of Things To Do In March
