My Voice

Sharing water is harder than you would think.

Something so plentiful and yet the offer is simple. This thing so casually passed around. Used in everything. Essentially unregulated while people spend many of their dollars on it. The quality test is real and quantity poses other risks.  Definitely something almost everything in the world needs to exist, though how we get it can vary drastically.

I can confidently say I have more awareness in my big toes (and big thumbs) than most of the humans I know.  That is something I’m proud of.  Like the small box at the jewelry store, toe awareness is more valuable than it looks.  I got here with hard work and consistent practice.  I’m not an A+ yoga student when it comes to attendance.  For all my good intentions, I’m usually only there 2-3 times a month.  The only way I make that work for me is the 5 minutes I do every day.

Whenever I get out of the shower, morning or night, I stand in tadasana on the bathroom tile for at least 2 minutes.  For a long time, that’s all I did.  After a while, I added urdhva hastasana.  Last year, I incorporated gomukhasana arms and reverse namaskar.  I do the same thing whenever I have free time throughout the day. Waiting in line, tadasana legs.  Sitting at a desk, gomukhasana.  You get the idea.

This isn’t a yoga practice in the traditional sense.  I believe these small moments of mindfulness keep me connected to my somewhat erratic practice.  My home practice on a mat averages 2-3 times a week depending on schedules.  When I get this precious time for an actual practice I don’t feel like it takes me 20 minutes just to warm up.  The muscular memory from all my small moments add up to a stronger foundation.  I get more out of 30 minutes of yoga than I used to.

I’m working on finding some breathing exercises that I can fit into my daily life.  Hopefully just directing my consciousness there more often will result in a stronger foundation for my pranayama practice.

I’m taking applications for a PWYC class of 4-6 people who don’t do yoga and want to learn a little about it.  Email rochelle@evergreenyogamemphis.com if interested!
