Spillit: Identity Crisis 6/20/2014

Last night, I had an experience with five strangers that profoundly changed my self-perspective.  While that may sound hyperbolic (and perhaps a little dirty) to most people, anyone that has experienced the Spillit project live knows what I’m talking about.  This unique production group, inspired by a podcast called The Moth, provides individuals the chance to open up in a safe space and tell personal stories.

Sometimes people spill their wisdom in a humorous way and sometimes they share a secret life experience.  Universally, they all reveal a raw part of themselves that the average world never sees.  It’s a captivating experience for the listeners and (probably) a cathartic release for the storytellers.  Altogether, it comes out to the best $10 I’ve spent in a very long time.

The Memphis Dawls…

are playing DKDC tomorrow night.  So, that’s a thing.

If you know the Dawls, I don’t really have to say much more.  If you don’t – well, don’t you kinda want to be one of the ones who knows?

The Hard Road ~ Smog

After last weekend’s wildness, it’s understandable if you want to take it easy for the next few days.  However, July 4th is around the corner and there will be plenty of private parties for kicking back.  June has been a hot month for happenings and I don’t plan to quit now.  Not everything has to be turned up to 11, so if you’re tired take a look and choose one of the less intense activities for this weekend.

Musical Chairs

I set out early last night with a plan.  The gods chortled as I was  derailed by caffeine (or lack thereof), low funds, and excessive anticipation.  Fun was had, but I had a slow start finding it.

Hooligans and Haircuts

I went against my nature yesterday and ventured into the land of sports.  After my experience at Celtic Crossing for the USA v England World Cup match, I vowed to watch USA games from the safety of a private dwelling in the future.  But when I saw the setup The Brass Door put together for this Cup’s opening game, I couldn’t help but check it out.  Continue reading Hooligans and Haircuts

Damfoolishness

The party gods must’ve heard my prayers.  Black Lodge is throwing ANOTHER shindig.  This one is tomorrow night (Tuesday) and kicks off around 9:30ish.

They’re even serving food.  You just don’t have any excuses now.

Morning – Beck

It was a hectic weekend, to be sure.  Once all the dust settles, I think good times were had all around.  I heard that the Rosanne Cash show @ Levitt Shell pulled a record-breaking turnout.  I also received more than one invite to the new High Cotton Brewing Taproom that opened Saturday.  Apparently the Dead Soldiers capped off the festivities.  I was sorry to miss it, but I know the party must go on.

Unchained II & James & the Ultrasounds @ The Buccaneer 6/13/2014

Last night, there was magic in the air. Everywhere I went, people were in good spirits and having a great time. Of course, this means there was so much happening that I couldn’t get to everything I wanted to do. So I’ll just focus on the important part – Memphis creative expression at its best! Continue reading Unchained II & James & the Ultrasounds @ The Buccaneer 6/13/2014

Jazz Night @ The Cove

First, I want to make sure no one got washed away during the flash floods that hit around 6PM last night. Still here? Good. 😉 That freakishly heavy rain was a hidden blessing for the evening as a whole. The the temperature plummeted to a comfortable 70ish degrees and the persistent rain was a mere inconvenience. Of course, I did not attend the Overton Square event in the Tower Courtyard, so my perspective might be a little skewed.

I ventured east for the best location outside the parkways – the Broad Arts District. Continue reading Jazz Night @ The Cove
