I’ve Got Daddy Issues

I’m one of three daughters, of course I have daddy issues. It’s part of the birthright bestowed upon repressed offspring of upper middle class baby boomers. That’s just one of over 65 issues I can assign a target to. So naturally a one-man show called Daddy Issues piqued my interest.  The impressive figure cut by Peter Aguero in the trailer sold me the ticket. Celebrated host of The Moth, this man is an expert storyteller with years of experience honing the craft.  After going up for several Slams last season, I jumped at the chance to participate in his storytelling workshop this week.  I am inspired by the phenomenon Leah Keys has created here in Memphis with Spillit.  I can’t wait to hear a soliloquy based on the same concept.

themothimageLeah started Spillit in May of 2012.  By chance, The Unchained Tour directed by the founder of The Moth happened through Memphis several months later.  The tour invited Moth storytellers and a musical act to travel together.  The goal is to create a space where the audience unchains themselves from the outside world and be fully present while listening to an evening of music and true stories.  Leah helped the producer scout the White Room at Crosstown Arts and even offered her home for pre-show preparation. That’s where she met Peter Aguero.  During that night and while he hosted the show Leah says,

peteraguero“He was so warm and loving to the Memphis audience. He and I had many conversations about Spillit’s presence in Memphis and he was very supportive, giving great advice.”
