Hard as Hell

On the advice of my mentor, I indulged in a new television show – Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt.

By indulge, I do mean binge watch.

Firstly, as a die-hard fan of Friends I’m compelled to robotically point out the parallels: NYC, bright colors, exceptional ensemble cast, humor based on universal human struggles.  (I don’t know why I do that.)  Add a dash of every other successful show in recent memory and filter it through Tina Fey’s incisive wit.  You get a show about a girl who lives in a bunker until she’s 29 and then moves to New York City with nothing but optimism.

Eerily, I feel like the show is scripted just for me.  The superlative characters are joyfully relatable and the season feels like a horoscope, offering glimpses of self awareness in some very unlikely places.  I’m pretty sure a bunch of middle-class, middle-American ladies know what I mean. The hyperbolic medium encourages an insightful sense of humor.  I love the savory complexity of this strange little world while nostalgic pop culture references keep my disbelief delightfully suspended.

I was in my own “bunker” since age 13.  In 2014, I emerged and started re-discovering the world at a rapid pace.  Not nearly at the pace of Kimmie – but I am pretty darn cute in my own right.  Do yourself a favor and watch this show.  Ellie Kemper‘s only the tip of the adorable iceberg.  The theme song alone makes me laugh every time.
