Get Off Our Lawn

The Memphis Zoo is run by the Memphis Zoological Society.  Established in the early 1900s, they are a private, for-profit association that started with humble concrete cages.  In 1986, the Zoo came up with a plan to expand.  Since then, the amount of party space the zoo provides has increased exponentially while adding a dozen or so major exhibits.  One HUGE problem – they don’t have enough parking to accommodate this long-term master plan.  I love the Memphis Zoo and have spent years there as a patron and volunteer. I saw this picture of the new zoo parking solution in Overton Park and it makes me sick.

The Greensward is the only truly open, grassy area available to the public in Overton Park.  The old forest trails are more valuable than anything in that area.  That doesn’t mean we should sacrifice the iconic grassy lea at the center of Overton Park. Everything else is golf course, art stuff and the Levitt Shell.  The east side of the park has the pavilion but losing the greensward and Rainbow Lake limits options for enjoying the park in general.  The amount of space left for team sports, recreation and relaxation is a fraction of what we had a couple years ago.  Let them keep parking there now and that’s where they’ll build the parking garage in the future.

The Zoo gets paid for every car that passes through their gates. Currently, $5 per car.  They should at least raise the price of parking to $20 a car and see how many people choose to walk less than a mile from the free street parking just outside the park grounds.  What about the brand new garage in Overton Square?  Make the the garage free and charge for the shuttle to the zoo.  It would boost the Square economy and account for the overflow parking.  Or see if Rhodes wants to go halfsies on a North Side Parking Project?  I’m sure they need more parking too and Snowden school hardly uses that big patch of grass they call a field.

June 22

I am a singular person and a walking cliche.

I move through the line
Aware of the appearance
Still wondering
How far I can go.

Self awareness is not comfortable
It averages out well if you
stay true and humble
What I think of me matters

In search of healthy conflict
I know the key to surviving
is wrapped in acceptance
Loving east as I move west.

It warms my heart
Enveloped in the bestDaily life I’ve ever known
Alone for the first time.

June 21st

Today I was the eye of the storm. I that means I only stopped to think twice. I feel bad for anyone caught up in the shit storm surrounding me.

My dad came out mostly unscathed. For Father’s Day, I helped him move furniture. If it were up to me, said furniture would probably have been sold in the great purge of 2015. It will be meted out to my two sisters and favorite relatives eventually, unless I score a moving truck when I head west. But that’s something for future me to worry about. Right now, I’m stoked

Now I’m at the Lamp to catch a punk show. It’s just me and another girl who knows the band and the band. Still the eye of the storm, I drew innocent souls into battle without warning. I understand people are real but that doesn’t stop me from being me.

Good band. I miss Shirley burgers.

*ahem*

Picture this.

Empty stage.
Matte black floor dotted with the remains of old tape.
A single light bulb dangles from an unseen chain above the stage.
Dusty curtains hang limply, neither open nor shut, simply there.

A woman emerges into the unflattering light carrying a wooden box.
She places the box on the black floor with a thump.
Reaching in her back pocket, she pulls out a container of hand soap.
Using a small caddy, she hooks it over the edge of the box.

Stepping up to stand on top of the box, spreading her arms for balance, the woman turns toward you and folds her hands demurely.
Holding a steady gaze, she smiles and begins to speak…

Climb Out of the Darkness 2014: Team Memphis

Yesterday, around 8:30AM, Memphis participated in Climb Out of the Darkness for the first time.  This non-profit event, started by Postpartum Progress in 2013, is the largest effort to raise awareness of perinatal mood disorders.  In only one year, the event has grown from 177 participants to well over 1,000 climbers.  In addition to that, the amount of money raised this year more than tripled the amount from 2013.  Continue reading Climb Out of the Darkness 2014: Team Memphis

The Hard Road ~ Smog

After last weekend’s wildness, it’s understandable if you want to take it easy for the next few days.  However, July 4th is around the corner and there will be plenty of private parties for kicking back.  June has been a hot month for happenings and I don’t plan to quit now.  Not everything has to be turned up to 11, so if you’re tired take a look and choose one of the less intense activities for this weekend.
